Profits Through integrating Projects, Processes, & People
Transformed the business with process improvements and software applications
Process improvement and data management are strengths of mine. My efforts in these areas focus on developing efficient processes throughout the supply chain supported with systems designed to manage and facilitate the work, reduce waste, and create competitive advantages. While at New Pig Corporation I have created the core vision for most of the following systems since 2001. I worked with IT and the owners of the respective processes to define, create, test, deploy, and train users on these new tools.
SPEED: A manufacturing application containing all training, procedures, bill of materials, and spec sheets. It improved product quality and reduced cost.
PAL: A product introduction and maintenance workflow application. It organizes the collection of data required to add new and maintain existing products. This data is supplied by multiple departments in order to purchase, invoice, report, fulfill, market, and support after the sale. It improved the quality of the data and provided visibility and accountability to deliver the correct data at the right time.
SPORT: A portal to collect and audit required supplier and product set up information. It replaced spreadsheets, emails, and reduced management time.
CORAL: A storage and management tool for contract approval, retrieval, and renewal. It replaced desktop and directory storage and reduced management time.
FLOW: A warehouse tool to pick, put away, rotate, and cycle count stock. Wireless touchscreens are mounted directly on the fork trucks. It reduced travel time and errors.
Created process to clearly position and organize over 7400 web items
SHAPE IT: A multi-purpose tool with three primary objectives:
An application to house and route content associated with a new product concept so that each concept can be approved based on its market need, positioning, and expected financials followed by cannibalization, legal, and brand compliance checks. Replaced a SAAS package that had been awkwardly implemented and was confusing and ineffective.
A content management system to serve as a central repository for multi-level product category structure content to support a new content-rich browse structure for www.newpig.com, product labels, and invoices. Utilized data inheritance to eliminate redundant data management at the product level in the PAL system.
An input management tool to house all IT and Creative project requests. The primary purpose is to create one place for all the work in order to eliminate departmental silos, to allow anyone to see the full picture of the demand, to place more emphasis on defining the work before doing the work, and to reduce the likelihood of work just appearing on someone’s desk. Ownership, priority, and status of the work are also managed. Resulted in making better holistic decisions on what work to do, how to do the work, and the overall process went faster and with less “reacting” because of the time spent defining up front.
The New Pig website had a traditional browse structure that guided the customer from large categories of products down to a specific product page. While we had done a thorough job creating differentiating content at the product page level, the category levels above the product page were woefully devoid of content to help the customer choose the best product for their application. Enter Shape It and Farkle. Farkle is a nonsense name which references a 4 level browse structure called: Country, State, City-Neighborhood, and House.
I created the vision and directed a team to build a central repository for multi-level product category structure content to support a new content-rich browse structure for www.newpig.com. This repository is called Shape it. Once it was built, I led a larger project to design the browse pages below and create the content needed to position the categories at each level so that customers could make clear, informed decisions. Data management was reduced through the concept of inheritance, so that content is entered and stored once at the highest applicable category and inherited down by all its children categories. The Shape It enterprise application was then extended to also supply content for product labels and invoices.
Level 1: Absorbent Country page with States
Level 2: Absorbent Mats State with Cities
Level 3: Oil-Only UV-Resistant Absorbent Mat City page with Houses arranged in Neighborhoods
Level 4: MAT487 House page
Implemented reorganization and process control at struggling subsidiary
New Pig acquired SpillTech, an absorbent manufacturer located in Mobile, Alabama. The new subsidiary was troubled with poor service to its distributors, production errors, shipping delays, and overall unprofitability. I led a cross-functional team that assessed the existing management team, installed systems, implemented company-wide processes similar to New Pig, and consolidated the product offering by 40%. Two years later, New Pig acquired Ergon Environmental Products (EEP). This time I lead a team to consolidate EEP into SpillTech. Steps were taken to close EEP, reduce locations, merge product offerings, harmonize product pricing, and consolidate systems and processes. Below are pictures of SpillTech's 90K sq. ft. facility before and after operational changes.
